Tag: Barred Shrimp Goby (Cryptocentrus Fasciatus)

I've so far only come across this species at shallow sites around the south of Koh Tao.

On the dive when i first spotted it, it was very common (usually in pairs), with burrows occurring every few meters across the sand at a depth of around 10m or so.

It's taken a long time to identify this species, possibly because there seems to be a fair variation in colours between individuals, ranging from very pale, to pale with dark, uneven bands.

I'm still not more than about 80% confident that this is the correct identification, but until i can be sure either way, i'll stick with this.

Barred Shrimp Goby - Pale Variation (Cryptocentrus Fasciatus)

A very pale variation of the Barred Shrimp Goby (Cryptocentrus Fasciatus).

I've found a few different colour variations, ranging from light to dark, and also noticed a possible difference depending on time of year/season.

Barred Shrimp Goby (Cryptocentrus Fasciatus)

If there was to be a "classic" example of the Barred Shrimp Goby (Cryptocentrus Fasciatus), i guess this could be it (according to most references).

This species appears to come in such a wide variation of tones, from very pale with rather indistinct bars, to dark to the extent that the bars are almost indistinguishable.
